Supportive Services

Homelessness does not have a one-size-fits-all solution.

At every stage of their journey, from the time a person or family walks through the front door of LAFH to the time they walk through the front door of their new home, our staff work hand-in-hand with participants to assess, engage, and re-engage with them, ensuring that everyone receives the customized support and solutions they need to stabilize their lives.

Our comprehensive service model includes a wide range of services. These may include connections to mental and physical health care; trauma recovery services, including resources for survivors of domestic violence; substance use disorder treatment; employment and education support; financial literacy; and youth enrichment programs. If we don’t provide services directly, we leverage our broad network of partner agencies across the region to meet the specialized needs of our participants.

Recognizing that housing stability is deeply connected to health outcomes, in 2024 we expanded three key areas of support for our residents.

Expansion of harm reduction services

LAFH has embedded comprehensive harm reduction strategies across all of our Interim and Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) sites to meet the intersecting needs of individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use, and increased HIV risk. We employ dedicated Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Specialists who rotate across our sites, leading harm reduction education sessions, providing individualized case management, and distributing critical supplies. SUD Specialists also collaborate with the mental health team to offer well-attended art groups and movie nights, fostering engagement in a non-stigmatizing environment.

Introduction of mobile health clinics

2024 marked the launch of rotating mobile health clinics in collaboration with Comprehensive Community Health Centers and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, which now regularly visit our interim and PSH sites to offer STI testing and STD/HIV detection and treatment counseling. This mobility eliminates many access barriers that our participants face. By bringing care directly to where people live, we have not only increased testing participation but also normalized conversations around sexual health in a trauma-informed, nonjudgmental setting.

This integrated care model ensures a continuum of support—from testing to treatment planning—delivered by professionals trained in culturally responsive, harm reduction-centered care.

Increase in linkages to higher levels of care

LAFH is a regional leader in both in-house wellness programs and partnerships, leading SPA 2 in partnering with mental health providers such as the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health to allow for faster connections to mental and physical health resources and higher levels of care for participants as needed. Interim housing participants also have access to Northeast Valley Health Corporation’s clinic co-located at LAFH’s main campus in North Hollywood, which provides physical, behavioral, vision, and dental health services, with transportation provided as needed for participants across all LAFH interim housing sites.

Partner Highlight / Jewish Community Foundation

LA Family Housing is deeply grateful for our longstanding partnership with the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles (JCF), which has spanned over 30 years. In 2024, this collaboration continued through JCF’s provision of Hardship Relief Funds, critical support that enables us to meet the urgent needs of individuals and families facing financial barriers not covered by public funding. These funds are often the key to helping households overcome obstacles that might otherwise prevent them from achieving or maintaining housing stability.

JCF funding was able to help a single mother of two daughters who was preparing to move into permanent housing when her car suddenly broke down. As her moving expenses grew, she found herself unable to afford the necessary car repairs. Without transportation, she faced the risk of losing her job and would have been unable to complete her move or attend vital medical appointments for her children. Thanks to JCF’s Hardship Relief Funds, she was able to repair her vehicle, complete her move, and begin a new chapter—secure in stable housing and equipped to care for her family.
