LA FAMILY HOUSING AND LAFHBUILDS

For over 40 years, LA Family Housing Corporation operated two very distinct businesses as a real estate developer and homeless services provider, to advance our mission to end homelessness in people’s lives. Through this time, our commitment to this mission kept the two business models combined, despite the inherent operating challenges of that structure.

With that in mind, 2024 saw the official launch of LAFHBUILDS, a separate and distinct legal non-profit, affiliate corporation to develop, manage, and operate long-term real estate assets. As a real estate developer and homeless services provider, LAFH recognizes that the key to ending homelessness in our region is to provide more permanently affordable homes. Our portfolio of over 40 interim, affordable, and permanent supportive properties provides housing and stability for thousands of people each year – and we’re still building!

2024 saw many real estate grand openings and ground-breakings.

Crest Apartments

LAFH was the service provider at The Crest Apartments for many years before assuming ownership of the property in 2024 and giving it a much-needed face lift. Crest Apartments is a 64-unit permanent supportive housing site for homeless individuals who are frequent users of the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services’ emergency care. Of these, 23 homes are reserved for homeless and disabled veterans. The Crest offers comprehensive onsite supportive services to help residents build healthier, more stable lives while fostering healing and connection.

My Angel

My Angel has a deeply personal origin story tied to its benefactor, Hal Kassner, a proud Veteran and former owner of Angel Appliances, a business he operated on the same site for nearly 60 years. In 2017, Hal reached out to LAFH with an extraordinary offer to donate the property under the condition that it would be developed into housing for Veterans. My Angel, which opened its doors in 2024, is now an inspiring 54-unit apartment building designed to provide permanent supportive housing for Veterans, chronically homeless individuals, and those experiencing mental illness.

The Cielo

Construction began in 2024 on The Cielo, one of five modular supportive housing developments produced as part of a $40 million City of Los Angeles HHH Innovation Challenge Award made to LA Family Housing, Abode Communities, and Mercy Housing California as a nonprofit developer collaborative. When it opens in 2025, The Cielo will provide 99 new homes for our most vulnerable neighbors.

In 2024, LA Family Housing opened 177 new units of housing, and now has 329 units under construction.
