Outreach and Engagement

LA Family Housing uses street-based outreach and in-person engagement to begin the process of moving people home.

Our trained Outreach Specialists go into the community as part of multidisciplinary teams to make initial contact and maintain ongoing connections with people living on the streets, including those in encampments and hard-to-reach areas. LAFH Outreach team members work to establish trust over time, helping to connect these individuals with the housing solutions and essential supportive services that can end homelessness in their lives, including mental and physical healthcare, substance use support, trauma recovery counseling, benefits resources, and assistance with obtaining documentation needed to access services.

For anyone seeking information to quickly resolve their housing crisis, our Engagement team is ready to help connect them to homeless and rehousing services. The team provides critical intervention services at our Individual Solution Center and Family Solution Center, both located at our main Irmas Family Campus in North Hollywood. We also work across the region, conducting program intakes and providing problem solving and homeless prevention and diversion services for single adults, couples and families in L.A. County’s Service Planning Area (SPA) 2, covering the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys, and SPA 1, encompassing the Antelope Valley.

Of those engaged, 83% chose to take advantage of further services to obtain housing.

Nora

Nora endured heartbreaking hardships—childhood abuse, teenage pregnancy, and an unstable home. After ninth grade, she had her first child and dropped out of school. Her older partner became abusive, and the violence escalated until a neighbor called the police, leading to his arrest.

Left alone to care for nine children, Nora struggled. She was evicted while pregnant and gave birth the same day she lost her home. With nowhere to go, she and her children lived in their car, facing cold nights, hunger, and fear. Constantly moving, her children lost friends and stability. At her lowest point, Nora felt hopeless.

Then she found LA Family Housing.

Before arriving at LAFH, Nora feared losing her children, but instead, she found warmth and support. LAFH provided safe interim housing, keeping her family together. Staff helped her secure documents, enroll her children in school, and access mental health services. For the first time, Nora felt heard and empowered.

With help from LAFH’s Housing Navigation team, Nora found a permanent home. Holding the keys felt surreal. Her children ran through the house with joy, jumping on their new beds. LAFH continued to provide stabilization support, employment assistance, and financial coaching. Nora secured a job as a caregiver, a role she loves.

Today, Nora and her children have a home, stability, and hope. Thanks to LAFH, she has become the strong, independent woman she always hoped to be.
